Welcome to the City of Freeport, Illinois, also known as "Pretzel City USA." The pretzel became the trademark for Freeport when the Billerbeck Baker, which was established in 1869, flooded Freeport with pretzels!

History buffs will want to tour the Stephenson
County Historical Museum or visit one of the famous
Lincoln-Douglas debate statutes located in town. "Lincoln and
Douglas in Debate" is located on the corner of Douglas and State
Streets. This area also includes a plaque dedicated by President Theodore
Roosevelt in 1903. "Lincoln the Debater Statue" is located in
Taylor Park. These statues can be viewed year round.

Avid shoppers enjoy browsing in Freeport's downtown district, as well as in the county's smaller communities. If you are looking for a treasure from the past, you might find it in one of the many antique stores in Freeport and the surrounding communities.

Freeport and Stephenson County families live close to nature and enjoy a variety of recreational opportunities in all seasons. The Freeport Park District maintains more than 770 acres of parkland in eight parks, a nature preserve, and wetlands preserve. In addition, the district operates Park Hills Golf Course, with two 18-hole courses.
How about absorbing some local culture?
Freeport has lots to offer including art, history and theater. You can explore the six permanent exhibits at the Freeport Arts Center or visit the Americana and antique machinery exhibits at the Silver Creek Museum. The Winneshiek Players provide quality, live theater each season and are the oldest continuous amateur theater in the country. The Ferguson Fine Arts Theater, located on the campus of Highland Community College, features a variety of vocal and music concerts, live theater, and special performances.
