Freeport is located
about 25 miles west of Rockford on U.S. Highway 20, a four-lane divided
highway that skirts the community's northern edge. Rockford links with
Interstates 90 and 39, giving Freeport residents easy access to the
Interstate system: I-90 is the major route between Chicago,
Minneapolis-St. Paul and Milwaukee.
Illinois State Routes 26 and 75 tie the city with neighboring
communities in Stephenson County as well as
Madison, WI and
In addition, Highway 26 meets I-88 south of Freeport.
US Highway 20 continues west of Freeport to historic
Galena, IL and
Access to airports is not difficult. Freeport travelers can fly out of
the Greater Rockford Airport, located in the southwest corner of
Rockford. Eight air freight services also serve the airport, which is
the 35th in the nation in the number of cargo flights that arrive and
depart. It is the second busiest UPS hub in the United States. It is
Foreign Trade Zone #176 and a Port of Entry for U.S. Customs.
Chicago's O'Hare International Airport is about 90 minutes from
Freeport. Midway Airport, also located in Chicago, Illinois, and
Milwaukee's Mitchell Airport are approximately two hours from Freeport.
Private and corporate aircraft use Freeport's Albertus Airport, located
just three miles south of the city. The airport accommodates small jets
with a 5,500-foot-long paved and lighted runway. In addition, it has two
grass runways, 2,700 and 2,800 feet in length that are used by small
privately owned planes. The airport offers training and charter service.
The city's businesses and industries are served by Canadian National
Railroad and by some fifty motor freight carriers. One of the freight
hauling companies has a terminal in Freeport.
Pretzel City Area Transit
Public transit is also made convenient. Through a partnership with the Senior Resource Center, the City of Freeport provides public transportation throughout all of Stephenson County. The service, called Pretzel City Area Transit, operates weekdays from 6:00AM until midnight and on Saturday from 6:00AM until 1:00PM. The handicap accessible transportation is available with 24 hour advance appointment by phoning 815-235-RIDE or 815-235-7433. Same-day service is subject to availability.
The regular adult fare is $3.00 for door-to-door service. Seniors 60 and older may ride on a voluntary donation basis. Please call to inquire about other rates or special services offered.
